Abuja:The Diamond Assembly, a platform aimed at bolstering women’s roles in governance and decision-making, has emphasized the need for increased collaboration among women to foster national development. Dr. Victoria Ogwuche, Founder and Global President of the Connect Network Foundation, made this call during the Diamond Assembly National Conference in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Ogwuche encouraged women to utilize their influence, build meaningful collaborations, and create opportunities for each other to enhance their participation in governance and national development. She highlighted that the Diamond Assembly serves as a platform for influential women to engage in governance, undertake projects, and influence decision-making across various sectors and states.
Despite growing calls for greater female involvement in governance and policymaking, actual participation remains low. The assembly was created to provide women with a strong platform rather than merely seeking inclusion. It aims to foster continuity and build a legacy beyond mere events and social gatherings.
Dr. Ogwuche noted that the assembly would focus on leadership, mentorship, collaboration, decision-making, and opportunity creation, working across Nigeria to address educational and mentorship gaps while strengthening women’s connections. She emphasized replacing competition with collaboration to achieve significant impact.
She announced plans for equitable representation of women from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as the assembly expands. Members are expected to identify opportunities, connect with partners, and measure the impact of their initiatives. The assembly’s operations are guided by a constitution vetted by the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development.
Princess Margaret Elayo, Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment, Solid Minerals and Mining in Nasarawa State, urged women to support one another and encourage participation, regardless of age or status. She emphasized that women are sufficient to drive positive change within their communities and the country.
Mr. Jamil Abdulkarim, Founder and CEO of Strange Nomad Group, stressed that women’s participation in leadership should be supported by knowledge, experience, and perseverance. He highlighted that inclusion leads to opportunities, trust fosters leadership, and influence builds legacy.
The conference panel also addressed economic independence, stating that financial capability can empower women to meet personal needs and make difficult decisions, particularly in abusive relationships. They called for societal attitude changes and practical support for victims to complement laws like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act.
Panelists urged an end to victim-blaming and stigma against abuse survivors and emphasized the importance of mental health and self-esteem for women.
