Abuja: Mr Aliyu Abdullahi, a retiring Director of Human Resources Management at the Federal Ministry of Works, has called on civil servants to reject greed and the get-rich-quick mentality while maintaining discipline in their professional lives. Abdullahi made these remarks during his valedictory speech at a retirement party organized by the Ministry, emphasizing the detrimental effects of the pursuit of sudden wealth among some civil servants.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Abdullahi highlighted that the desire to become wealthy quickly is a major factor contributing to corruption within the service. He advised civil servants to focus on diligence and discipline, warning that greed and the pursuit of sudden wealth lead to numerous problems in the system. Abdullahi urged civil servants to live within their means to enjoy their tenure and contribute positively to the service.
Abdullahi also expressed concern over the decline in discipline and respect within the civil service. He reminisced about a time when junior staff would demonstrate respect by stepping aside for directors in office corridors, a practice he noted has largely disappeared. He encouraged current civil servants to restore the values of discipline and respect that once characterized public office.
Reflecting on his career, Abdullahi expressed gratitude for the journey he embarked on in 1990 as a personnel officer, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities he encountered. He thanked his colleagues, family, and friends for their support throughout his career.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Rafiu Adeladan, congratulated Abdullahi on his retirement and extended best wishes for a rewarding and peaceful future. Adeladan expressed hope for continued strength and fulfillment in Abdullahi’s post-service years.
