Ebonyi governor seeks massive turnout for Saturday polls

The Governor of Ebonyi State. David Nweze Umahi has called for the proper sensitization of voters to enable them come out enmasse and participate in the forthcoming Local Government elections slated for Saturday.

Umahi made the call during a meeting with traditional rulers and town union presidents at the Government House, Abakaliki.

Umahi, who declared Friday as a public holiday, to enable the electorate travel home for the election, also encouraged the traditional rulers to ensure effective participation of the people in voter registration and the forthcoming census.

Meanwhile, a coalition of 30 election monitoring groups has arrived in Abakaliki ahead of Saturday, April 22 council elections in Ebonyi State.

The Kalu Victor-led coalition, at a news conference at the Women Development Centre in Abakaliki, said its members were in the state to ensure that a fair playing field was provided for all poitical parties taking part in the elections.

Victor, who spoke for the groups, however commended Governor David Umahi for considering it necessary to conduct the council elections, despite the economic recession in the country.

He said their observation across the country showed that most governors were using the economic hardship in the country as an excuse not to conduct elections in their states.
