ECG Launches Mass Meter Replacement Project in Tema Region

Tema: The Tema Regional Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commenced a significant meter replacement initiative, aiming to upgrade customers to new prepaid meters. This project is part of ECG’s efforts to modernize its services and enhance customer convenience.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer for ECG, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the new meters operate remotely and eliminate the need for an intermediary. The replacement exercise targets the substitution of older prepaid meters that require card-based credit loading. Customers currently using these card-based systems have to load credit onto the cards and swipe them in the meters for activation.

Ms. Mensah explained that the new smart prepaid meters are designed for direct credit loading, bypassing the need for physical cards. The replacement exercise will extend to customers using older versions of prepaid meters in the Tema Metropolis, Prampram, Afienya, Nungua, and Ashaiman areas. Importantly, this upgrade comes at no cost to the customers, even if it involves re-routing.

Nii Kwei Codjoe, the Marketing Officer for ECG Tema Region, highlighted the importance of customer vigilance during this transition. He warned of potential fraud risks, as unscrupulous individuals might attempt to deceive customers during such projects. Codjoe emphasized that ECG does not conduct field payments and has transitioned to a cashless system, with all transactions required to be digital.

The need for this technological upgrade is in line with the continuous evolution of technology. Codjoe pointed out that the smart prepaid meters being introduced will offer greater convenience to customers, eliminating issues like missing cards and the associated hassles of replacements.

He also urged the public to be cooperative with ECG field workers, advising them to ask questions if in doubt and to request identification from the workers when necessary.
