Abuja:President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the necessity of implementing difficult economic reforms to tackle Nigeria’s longstanding structural distortions and establish a foundation for future prosperity.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu made these remarks during a nationwide broadcast commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary. He reflected on the economic challenges his administration faced in 2023 and criticized the reluctance of previous governments to confront these issues, which led to worsening conditions and hindered development.
Tinubu described the country’s economic state as dire, likening it to a cancer patient in need of painful treatment for recovery. He criticized past leaders for prioritizing short-term relief over addressing fundamental economic challenges, which ultimately transferred the burden to future generations.
The President stated that his administration is committed to tackling the underlying problems through necessary reforms, despite the immediate economic impacts. He acknowledged the challenges brought about by these reforms but urged people not to mistake the tough measures for the problems themselves.
Tinubu reiterated that the reforms are crucial for addressing the country’s economic weaknesses and are part of his administration’s efforts to achieve a more prosperous Nigeria.
