Journalists in West Africa have been urged to propagate ideals of peace and security in the region.
The Commissioner, Political Affairs, Peace and Security, ECOWAS Commission, General Francis Behanzin made the call in a message at the opening of a three day workshop for Journalists from ECOWAS Member States in Abuja, Nigeria.
General Behanzin was represented by the Director of Political Affairs; ECOWAS Commission Dr. Aderemi Ajibewa.
Dr. Ajibewa said the role of the media can never be overemphasised as the voice of the society.
You are the history, the memory, the culture of the people, of the citizens, the voice of the voiceless, he said.
He disclosed that the Commission had identified and selected journalists from the regional body's fifteen member nation to play key role in promoting the region's peace and security agenda.
The purpose of the current workshop is to engage the media in its full spectrum in the promotion of peace and security, he explained.
The Head of Operations EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS Mr. Kurt Cornelis represented by the Head of EU Regional Cooperation, Ms. Stefania Marrone, said the project aims to support ECOWAS to execute its conflict prevention and resolution mandate.
He said the EU also supports ECOWAS in Conflict Prevention Framework including Early Warning, Good Governance and Democracy.
I wish to affirm on behalf of the European Union, our full commitment to working with ECOWAS Commission in encouraging and advancing regional efforts to bring peace and development to the sub-region.
He said the media is key in the area of conflict prevention as well as peace building.
The three day workshop on the Role of the Media in Promoting Peace and Security in the ECOWAS Region is taking place in Abuja, Nigeria from 25th to 27th June, 2018.
The Media Workshop is funded under the ECOWAS-EU Peace, Security and Stability Project.
The objective of the workshop is to enhance the visibility of ECOWAS Peace and Security interventions in Member States.
The workshop will provide Journalists in the region with appropriate information on peace and security efforts of the ECOWAS Commission so as to enable them become well informed and engage ECOWAS citizens and thereby effectively promoting peace and security in the region.
