The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Gombe State has recorded low turnout of women for voters’ registration, as the program continues across the nation.
Speaking with journalists shortly after an interactive session with stakeholders in the State, the Acting Administrative Secretary of the Electoral Gommission in Gombe State, Mr. Zakari Musa said out of the 13,021 persons registered in the State, only 4,496 were women.
According to him, even though the exercise is for those who have attained the age of 18-years since the last exercise, it is also expected that more women should have come out, considering their number based on recent population estimation.
Mr. Musa said the electoral commission had to increase the number of centres in the State by six, so that people complaining about the distance could gain access to their centres from where they live.
He said the electoral commission had started airing jingles on televisions and radios, as well as the stakeholders’ forum to create more awareness for the public to come out and get registered.
Those who have issues of transfers for example or their cards are missing, all they need to do is to approach our registration officials and notify them of their circumstance and INEC will guide them on what to do.
For example, those who lost their cards apply for the replacement of these cards; those who have transferred will apply for the transfer of their centres to their new centres. We are hopeful that the chairman’s pledge of stepping down the registration centres to all the polling units before the 2019 general elections will come up on stream.
Mr. Musa also said it had improved the funding and other logistic arrangements for the next election and was expecting smooth operations in the registration centres.
He called on people concerned to come out and participate in the registration, more importantly that the registration is not for everybody and whoever has registered during the last registration exercise need not to register again.
