Enugu: Football enthusiasts in Enugu have expressed optimism that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will defeat the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the Quarter-Final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The match, which is set to take place on Saturday in Marrakesh, is expected to be a crucial encounter as the Super Eagles seek to avenge their previous defeat by the Algerians in the 2019 AFCON semi-final.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the fans believe that with the Super Eagles’ performances up to this point, the team is well-positioned to secure a victory over Algeria. Dan Onwuegbuna, the Director of Information in the State’s Ministry of Sports, noted that the Super Eagles are currently in high spirits. He emphasized that the team is highly motivated, having won all four of their matches so far, and he expressed confidence that they will not lose to Algeria, viewing this as an opportunity to avenge their 2019 semi-final exit.
Onwuegbuna also called on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to ensure that the team remains motivated by addressing any outstanding issues related to bonuses and allowances. He stressed the importance of settling any financial matters immediately to prevent them from affecting the team’s performance.
Gideon Iwueke, Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Enugu State, echoed Onwuegbuna’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to win against Algeria. He highlighted the technical preparedness of the team but also pointed out concerns over match bonuses, urging authorities to resolve these issues to maintain the players’ morale. Iwueke emphasized the significance of this match as an opportunity for the team to restore the confidence of Nigerians, especially after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Former footballer Bright Ogbodo shared his belief in the team’s potential, revealing that he dreamt of Nigeria reaching the AFCON final in Morocco. He expressed optimism that the Super Eagles will defeat Algeria and advance to the finals. Similarly, football fan Ngozi Amanze expressed her confidence in the team’s victory, mentioning that she had placed a bet on the Super Eagles winning the match.
