EU advocates freedom of opinion of Journalists

The right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to privacy of Journalists in Nigeria must be protected, European Union says.

The EU Representative at the 2017 World Press Freedom Day,Pauline Torehall who is also the Head Political ,Press and Information ,said the EU is increasingly giving attention to cyber activism and blogging,and have adopted a European strategy to address cyber security.

Torehall added that this is to ensure a secured and trustworthy digital environment for all users.

She stressed that freedom of expression remains challenged in many parts of the world.

freedom of expression remains a challenge in many parts of the world.The EU excpresses strong concerns on the continued increase of acts of intimidation, pressure and violence against journalists that take place across the world,in this context the implementation if the EU Guidelines on freedom of expression remains a key priorityTorehall said.

Freedom of expression is a right to be enjoyed by everyone,on the principle of equity,non-discrimination and universality. To deepen this commitment,the EU Human Rights Guidelines on freedom of Expression Online and Offline were adopted in May 2014?

On reports about incidents that appears to inhibit freedom in public space,Pauline said it is the primary obligation of the state to protect the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

For us in European Union ,where we notice a breach of freedom of expression,we follow them keenly and expect that they should be dealt with in accordance with the principles of international law

Also speaking at the event, the Unesco Professional Officer of Abuja Regional Office, Olushola Macaulay, said the 2017 Celebration of World Press Freedom Day was set apart to pay tribute to Journalists who were been killed in the line of duty and to give recognition to Media Proffessionals who work in dangerous zones.

The Unesco official added that the message of the 2017 celebration is to allow major stakeholders know that there is need to do more and to give voice to the voiceless .

The occassion was held to allow inclusive participation of citizens he added.

Economic Development

The National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mr Waheed Odusile,said that the world Press Freedom should be taken as global priority for economic development.

Over 200 journalists attended the event.
