Abuja: The European Union (EU) Delegation in Nigeria has refuted claims of reduced humanitarian assistance aimed at addressing food insecurity in the country. Contrary to allegations made in a press release by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on 25 July, which mentioned “massive cuts” by the EU and other international donors, the EU asserts that its support remains consistent. The EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Office ECHO has maintained its level of aid in the first half of 2025, comparable to the first half of 2024, with plans to increase funding through additional top-ups. This continuous support primarily targets nutrition, health, and emergency food assistance in Nigeria.
According to European Union, the EU Delegation acknowledged a revised version of the MSF press release that no longer attributes the alleged cuts to the EU. The EU commends MSF’s work, partly funded by the EU, in aiding malnourished children and mothers in Nigeria. The EU Ambassador, during a recent visit to Sokoto State, witnessed these efforts firsthand. The EU stresses the importance of disseminating verified and accurate information on this critical issue for the Nigerian populace. The EU Ambassador, alongside the Honourable Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, urged for increased resource mobilization from both domestic and international sources to tackle the nutrition emergency in Nigeria’s North-West and North-East regions.
