Abuja: A former Presidential Candidate of the defunct Nigeria for Democracy (NFD), Dr. Asukwo Archibong, has commended President Bola Tinubu for lifting the emergency rule in Rivers State and reinstating the elected Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Dr. Archibong, a legal practitioner, described the move as ‘a call for respect for the rule of law and democracy in Rivers State.’
According to Voice of Nigeria, Dr. Archibong noted that any deviation from constitutional governance is a painful experience. ‘The emergency rule was not pleasant, so we should naturally welcome the reinstatement of democracy. It is not about Governor Fubara as an individual, but about ensuring uninterrupted democratic governance and its dividends,’ he stated.
Dr. Archibong urged the Rivers State House of Assembly and the executive to work harmoniously while maintaining checks and balances. He emphasized that ‘legislators must ask critical questions of the executive to strengthen governance and ensure accountability.’
Dr. Archibong advised citizens to remain law-abiding and avoid violence, stressing that peace among the political class would enhance the welfare of the people. He further called on Governor Fubara to focus on service delivery and development, while commending the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his work in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Expressing optimism, Dr. Archibong said: ‘Hopefully, there will be peace all around, and Rivers State will experience good governance under Governor Fubara.’
