Fact Sheet: Kaga Local Government Area – Borno State, North-east Nigeria (Last updated 2 December 2019)

Overview

Kaga Local Government Area (LGA) is located in southern Borno with its administrative headquarters in Benisheikh.

It has an area of 2,700 square kilometresand is situated along Maiduguri Damaturu road.

The estimated population of Kaga is 89,996.

There are two routes in Kaga used by the NSAGs to transit from the southern to the northern part of Borno, and vice versa, which makes it susceptible to frequent NSAGs attacks.

Some villages in Kaga, such as Benisheik, Makintamari,

Mainok, and Ngamdu, have experienced repeated attacks by the NSAGs leading to displacement, killings, and destruction of houses and property.

Most of the IDPs live in spontaneous settlement/informal camps and with host families.

The population in Kaga are mostly people displaced and or liberated from communities around Benisheik such as Galangi, Zakurari, Shettimari, Burma, Jalori Shettimanuri, and Walari including those displaced and/or relocated from LGAs such as Bama, Kukareta and Konduga.

Benisheikh and Mainok have markets that operate weekly.

The markets can support Cash and Voucher Assistance.

The NAF frequently closes the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway due to recurrent NSAGs attacks, limiting movement of humanitarian staff and cargo.
