Lagos: A former Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has advocated for improved funding to enhance the research capacity of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR). Fashola spoke at the institute’s monthly media chat, which aims to inform the public about its research works and findings.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Fashola, who serves as the Chairman of the NIMR Foundation, noted that the institute had yet to receive the necessary attention to be on par with other global health institutes. He emphasized that with adequate support, the nation could become a significant contributor to future medical breakthroughs.
Fashola highlighted the impact of scientific discoveries on human life, citing examples such as eyeglasses and penicillin, which have significantly improved human welfare and global life expectancy. He stressed that NIMR, as the country’s leading medical research institute, must be sufficiently funded to fulfill its mandate and address the nation’s health needs.
He also called on the government to establish a reportorial system and an account where unused funds in the institute’s account are not reclaimed due to governmental yearly policies. This would ensure that the institute retains its resources for ongoing research.
Fashola urged the media to continue educating Nigerians on the importance of funding medical research, noting that it should not solely be the government’s responsibility. He pointed out that both private and public entities should support the institution through funding and advocacy.
Earlier, Prof. Oladapo Obafunwa, the Director-General of NIMR, stated that the media chat was initiated to promote accountability, collaboration, and public understanding of ongoing research activities. Obafunwa explained that the forum provides an opportunity to elucidate scientific works in clear language while strengthening engagement with journalists.
