Abuja: The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved significant upgrades for airports’ navigational and communication systems across the nation. This initiative aims to enhance air safety and modernize aviation infrastructure.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, announced the approvals while briefing State House correspondents. The FEC meeting was chaired by President Bola Tinubu. Keyamo detailed that the upgrades include installing an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System in Lagos and Abuja. This system is designed to detect runway obstructions and improve ground safety operations.
Keyamo further disclosed that FEC has approved the installation of new modular air traffic control towers for eight airports. Additionally, an aeronautical frequency monitoring and interference detection system is set to be implemented to strengthen communication reliability. He emphasized that this system enhances communication integrity and provides more accurate guidance during runway approach and departure procedures.
The council has also approved the procurement, replacement, and upgrade of remote-controlled air-ground VHF radio communication systems in nine airports. The airports slated for these upgrades include Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, Abuja, Kano, an additional site in Abuja, Maiduguri, Sokoto, and Wukari.
President Bola Tinubu has also approved the upgrade and rollout of biometric-enabled e-gates at all international airports. This measure is expected to fast-track passenger processing and improve the travel experience.
