Abuja: The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has sanctioned contracts totaling over N900 billion for comprehensive infrastructure upgrades at key airports throughout Nigeria. Mr. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, revealed this development following a recent FEC meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the State House.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the projects will be funded via the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. Mr. Keyamo emphasized the significance of these upgrades, particularly at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where International Terminal One will undergo complete rehabilitation and modernization. The terminal will be deconstructed to its structural frame and rebuilt to adhere to international standards. The redevelopment will involve overhauling the mechanical and electrical systems and is awarded to CCECC, the company behind Terminal Two’s construction in Lagos.
The extensive revamp of Lagos airports is budgeted at N712.26 billion, with an anticipated completion timeline of 22 months. Additionally, Terminal Two will see an expansion, incorporating a new apron, access roads, bridges, and related infrastructure.
FEC has also greenlit upgrades at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, focusing on the rehabilitation of runways and taxiways and upgrading the airfield ground lighting to Category 2 (CAT 2) standards. This N46.39 billion project, expected to conclude within 24 weeks, aims to enhance flight safety, especially during challenging harmattan seasons, allowing aircraft to land in hazy weather conditions.
A significant security enhancement at Lagos airport was approved, involving a 14.6 km perimeter fence equipped with CCTV, solar floodlights, intrusion detection systems, and patrol roads. This security upgrade, valued at nearly N50 billion, is projected to be completed in 24 months.
Port Harcourt International Airport will see runway and taxiway rehabilitation, with upgraded airfield lighting to CAT 2 standards. This N42.14 billion project aims to improve safety and operations during adverse weather conditions.
Furthermore, Mr. Keyamo announced FEC’s approval for the full business case for a 30-year concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State, marking a strategic move in enhancing airport operations and infrastructure across Nigeria.
