Federal Capital Territory commences raining season awareness

The Area council service secretariat in Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration has embarked on community sensitisation for residents of the city on the need to keep their environment clean to avoid natural disaster during the 2018 raining season.

The Director of administration and finance of the Area Council Service Secretariat, Alhaji Musa Abdulraheem stated this while leading his team to the awareness exercise in Abuja.

AbdulRaheem said that, the exercise also aims at reducing pressure on the Administration and the secretariat during the raining season.

He further explained that proper sensitisation of residents in each community will ensure self hygene, through disposing of refuse, abiding to the environmental rules as well as the need for healthy living.

As a secretariat, we usually go out with our guys to sensitize the people, beacuse pepole has decided the means of improper disposing of refuses, they dump it right inside the drainages which causes the blockage of the water channels and we have issues in the past where the administration were called upon for rescue mission to bury death the death or to provide relief materials.

We were at a cross road last season when a vehicle plunged into a gully and killed a man and his two kids at an Estate due to bad road caused by errotion, we would not allow this to occur again and we think what we adopt now is second to know, he stated.

The Director also revealed that the FCT, is currently taking cue from what happens at other areas like Lagos, Kano and Bauchi, with high rate of flood disaster records with another record of government expenditure on flood and disaster rescue mission.

Commenting on the places already blocked and begging for help, he said that the secretariate is collaborating with the Satelite Town Development Department, STDD, in the territory to educate people at the grassroots to to keep the city clean with budget provision meant for it.

Dangers of dirty environment

But you and I know that the country is currently having economic challenges and what we are getting prepared for is to ensure that the occurence will be limited and even if at all it happens that the agency responsible would wing into action having identified flash points.

Recently the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA-FCT, have sent relief materials to the victims of market fire disaster at Bwari area council, the Director stated.

Mr Abdulrahrem also revealed that, plans are underway to engage the media to sensitise the public on the danger associated with dirty environment.

On the means of finance, he gave an assurance that the administration has mapped out some reasonable amount for the project, adding that the administration is anxiously awaiting for the passing of the 2018 budget by National Assembly.
