Federal Government inaugurates working groups for Development Agenda 2050

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated technical working groups for the development of a Medium Term National Development Plan (MTNDP 2021-2025) and its long term development plan tagged Agenda 2050.

The Minister of State for Budget and National planning, Prince Clem Agba while inaugurating the working groups via a virtual meeting on Thursday said the initiatives were designed to succeed the current Vision 20:2020 and the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP2017-20) respectively.

Prince Agba said the plans have been designed to address developmental challenges in all aspects of the Nigeria’s National life within the agreed time frame.

According to him, econometrics and Input-Output Model would be used for the preparation of Macroeconomic framework for the two Medium -Term National Developmental Plan(MTNDP).2025 and 2026-2030, while Dynamic Comparable General Equilibrium (CGE) and System Dynamic-based Integrated Sustainable Development Goal Simulation (iSDG) Models for Nigeria’s Agenda 2050.

The Central Working Group(CWG) is headed by former Deputy Governor of the CBN and now Adviser to the President on Finance and economy, Dr. Sarah Alade while the Committee be Chaired by Sir Atedo Peterside and Co-chaired by Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National planning. ‘The Steering Committee also has members drawn from the various segments of the society, such as the six Governor representing the six geo-political zones, two major religions organisations, President National Council of Women Society etc’.

Prince Agba said the new plan would be led by the organized private sector and enabled by government.

The planning process would be inclusive and participatory with the full involvement of the sub-nationals (State and Local Government) the major political parties, the National Assembly, Youth and Women Organizations, physically challenged persons and other relevant stakeholders”.

The Minister revealed that the governance structure had three levels with the Technical Working Groups(TWG) as the base where all technical works would be carried out before escalation to the Central Working Group mandated to supervise the TWGs whose coordinators have been co-opted into the CWG.This according to the Minister is to allow for synergy between the different groups.

The Minister recommended the application of the concept of Futurology not only aimed at postulating possible probable and preferable futures  which would help create the future Nigerians desire.

Prince Agba said the Plans are comprehensive and have the capacity to accelerate the attainment of various regional and global Agendas including the Africa union’s Agenda 2063, ECOWAS integration Agenda and the Sustainable development goal 2030.
