Post: Federation of Construction Industry Trains 200 Nigerian Youths in Construction Trades


Abuja:The Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, has successfully trained 200 Nigerian youths in various construction-related trades. This initiative aims to equip young Nigerians with skills to contribute significantly to the country’s infrastructural development.



According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the training was conducted as part of the Nigeria Youth Employment through Skills Acquisition Fund (NYESAF), a key element of the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project. The FOCI President, Mr. Vincent Barrah, highlighted the importance of the program and urged participants to make the most of the opportunity.



The training program included 100 trainees in masonry, 50 in plumbing, and 50 in carpentry. Mr. Barrah emphasized the role of the FOCI Skills Academy, established in 2019, in providing vocational training and addressing skill and gender gaps in the industry. He noted the academy’s success in demonstrating the transformative impact of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).



Barrah also mentioned that skills in construction trades could uplift individuals and communities. He stated that the FOCI Skills Academy had gained recognition in the skills acquisition sector and had been respected by both national and international trainers.



The NYESAF project has expanded its focus to include women and youths, aiming to rectify social imbalances in the construction industry. Barrah reiterated FOCI’s commitment to championing policies and partnerships that strengthen the industry and support workers through training.



Plans are in place to broaden training opportunities to include electrical work, welding and fabrication, vulcanizing, and solar installation. Barrah encouraged participants to commit to their training to become proficient professionals.



Mrs. Blessing Ehi-Ogwu, the National Project Coordinator of the IDEAS Project Nigeria, expressed that the program aims to reduce unemployment and social challenges by providing practical skills for sustainable livelihoods. Participants are required to maintain at least 65% attendance to qualify for a starter pack and stipend.



Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), praised the efforts of FOCI Skills Academy, emphasizing the importance of competent and innovative youth for Nigeria’s economic growth and development.



Mr. Yerima Baba of the N-Power Programme, FCT, and Mr. Adetunji Adeniran, Registrar of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), encouraged trainees to focus on professionalism, punctuality, and quality in their work.



Miss Stella Ewuro, speaking on behalf of the trainees, shared how the training had positively impacted her career prospects. She expressed gratitude to the organizers and pledged the beneficiaries’ commitment to applying their newfound skills for the betterment of their communities.
