Abuja: The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality education to every Nigerian child, as three students from Yobe emerged world champions at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Competition in London. The students: Nafisa Aminu, Rukayya Muhammad, and Hadiza Kalli, won top positions in English Language skills, overall debate, and productive communication, placing Nigeria and Africa on the global map of academic excellence.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed this commitment during a reception organized in Abuja to honor the students’ achievements. “Simply put, our mandate is to ensure that every single child in Nigeria gets the highest quality of education. What we are celebrating here today is evidence that with the right policies, mentorship, and community support, our children can compete with the best in the world,” he said.
Dr. Alausa commended Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe for prioritizing education and urged other governors to emulate this model. He highlighted that the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, once among the highest globally, has started to decline due to vigorous interventions over the last 24 months.
Prof. Abba Idris, Yobe Commissioner of Basic Education, described the victory as “a triumph of resilience” despite years of insurgency that disrupted learning in the state. He detailed Yobe’s efforts, including the reconstruction of over 300 schools, establishment of 15 mega and model schools, and eight new girls’ senior secondary schools. Additionally, more than 5,000 teachers have been recruited and 9,452 others trained.
The commissioner also mentioned the provision of 85,000 classroom furniture sets, 627 classrooms, 119 staff quarters, and significant investments in school feeding, scholarships, free exam fees, and tertiary education support. “Over N4 billion has been spent on school feeding, N3 billion on WAEC, NECO and other exam fees this year alone, and N2.2 billion on scholarships at Nigeria Tulip International College, which produced today’s champions,” Idris stated.
He noted that over 40,000 Yobe indigenes are currently studying in tertiary institutions locally and abroad on government sponsorship, while tuition fees remain among the most affordable in the country, ranging from N9,000 to N56,000.
Responding to the commendations, Nafisa Aminu, the overall first-place winner, acknowledged that their achievement reflected Yobe’s massive investment in education. She expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Yobe Government, and the Federal Ministry of Education for their support.
