Akure: The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has announced plans to train over 1,500 teachers in senior secondary schools across Nigeria on digital literacy. This initiative aims to enhance the digital skills of educators, thereby positively impacting the educational landscape in the country.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, shared these details during his visit to assess the commission’s projects at Oyemekun Grammar School in Akure, Ondo State. The projects at the school include a 500-seater multi-purpose hall, twelve classrooms with two office buildings, and the complete renovation of an e-library complex.
Dr. Ajayi emphasized that the commission, under its 2023 Act, is tasked with regulating, coordinating, and providing interventions for senior secondary education nationwide. The digital literacy training is expected to equip teachers with essential digital knowledge, fostering a multiplier effect on education across the country.
He further revealed that 50 selected senior secondary schools across Nigeria’s 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have been earmarked for upgrades by NSSEC. Oyemekun Grammar School is among the beneficiaries, and Dr. Ajayi praised the contractors for their progress and quality of work, noting their promise to complete the projects by the end of the month.
Dr. Ajayi also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to quality education and infrastructural development to enhance teaching and learning. Moreover, he announced a collaboration with Google to train 6,000 teachers in artificial intelligence and digital literacy for senior secondary education.
During his visit, Dr. Ajayi also met with Ondo State’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, to commend the state government’s establishment of the Ondo State Senior Secondary Education Board. This development is expected to strengthen collaboration with NSSEC and accelerate the transformation of senior secondary education in the state.
He also announced plans to establish the commission’s South-West zonal office in Akure, applauding the state government’s efforts in the education sector. Responding to the visit, Commissioner Ajibefun praised NSSEC’s interventions and achievements, assuring that the state would align with the commission’s objectives and visions.
Additionally, Mr. Adeniyi Oluyide, the Principal of Oyemekun Grammar School, expressed gratitude to the commission for addressing the needs of senior secondary school education.
