Abuja: The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says prices of beans, garri, maize, tomatoes, beef, rice, and other food items witnessed a slight decrease in price in September 2025.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NBS released its Selected Food Prices Watch report for September 2025 in Abuja, highlighting significant trends in food prices across the nation. The report indicates a year-on-year decrease in the average price of 1kg of brown beans, dropping by 33.70 percent from N2,738.59 in September 2024 to N1,1815.76 in September 2025. Month-on-month, the prices fell by 1.74 percent from N1,847.82 in August 2025.
Similarly, the price of 1kg of white garri saw a reduction of 25.51 percent year-on-year, from N1,170.25 in September 2024 to N871.78 in September 2025. On a month-on-month basis, this price decreased by 6.52 percent from N932.53 in August 2025.
The report also noted a 16.57 percent year-on-year drop in the average price of 1kg of white grain maize, from N1,065.14 in September 2024 to N888.68 in September 2025. On a monthly basis, the price fell by 6.56 percent from N951.04 recorded in August 2025.
The price of 1kg of tomato was down by 10.56 percent year-on-year, from N1,430.87 in September 2024 to N1,279.84 in September 2025, with a slight month-on-month decrease of 0.45 percent from N1,285.61 in August 2025.
However, the report highlighted an increase in the average price of 1kg of local rice, which rose by 1.99 percent from N1,914.77 in September 2024 to N1,952.94 in September 2025, though it saw a month-on-month decrease of 0.56 percent from N1,963.87 in August 2025. Additionally, the price of 1kg of boneless beef increased by 21.79 percent year-on-year, from N5,633.60 in September 2024 to N6,861.25 in September 2025, but saw a marginal month-on-month decrease of 0.02 percent from N6,860.07 in August 2025.
The NBS report also provided a detailed state profile analysis, indicating that Enugu recorded the highest average price of 1kg of brown beans at N2,337.58, while Yobe had the lowest at N1,223.42. Ebonyi recorded the highest average price of 1kg of white garri at N1,297.22, whereas Taraba had the lowest at N450. In terms of white maize, Imo had the highest price at N1,488.5, while Yobe had the lowest at N547.84.
The report showed regional price variations, with the South-East and South-West regions recording the highest average prices for several food items. Additionally, the report highlighted efforts by President Bola Tinubu, who directed a Federal Executive Council Committee to facilitate a further reduction in food prices by ensuring safe passage of products across various routes in the country.
