Post: Forensic Psychology’s Role in Nigeria’s National Security and Justice

Abuja:The President of the Nigerian Association of Forensic Psychologists (NAFP), Dr. David Shekwolo, emphasized the vital role of forensic psychology in enhancing national security, justice systems, and the well-being of security personnel. He addressed these points at the 2026 Annual Scientific Conference, General Meeting, and Training organized in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the conference, with the theme ‘Forensic Psychology Practice in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges,’ marked the first time it was held outside an academic institution. Dr. Shekwolo highlighted the event’s aim to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the field of forensic psychology.

Dr. Shekwolo noted the increasing security challenges in Nigeria, such as terrorism, banditry, drug abuse, and cybercrime, which underscore the importance of forensic psychology. He stated that the collaboration with NSCDC signifies a significant step forward for the discipline in Nigeria and aims to reset its practice. The involvement of security and law enforcement agencies reflects growing national recognition of forensic psychology’s importance in criminal justice and security.

The NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, represented by Deputy Commandant-General Nnamdi Nwinyi, stressed the necessity of understanding human behavior and psychological resilience for effective security management. Audi advocated for the establishment of forensic psychology desks within security agencies and emphasized mental health as a core component of national security strategies.

Professor Andrew Zamani, President of the Pan-African Psychology Union, urged the development of forensic psychology curricula tailored to local challenges in Nigeria and Africa. He called for the ‘decolonization’ of psychology training to move away from Western models and better address African realities in security and justice.

The conference gathered psychologists, security officers, academics, and stakeholders to discuss the advancement of forensic psychology in Nigeria and its potential leadership role in Africa.
