Post: Former Presidents Honor Late Cleric William Okoye


Abuja:Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid tribute to the late Rev. William Okoye, describing him as a statesman of faith and a fearless voice of truth. The tribute was read by Bishop Godwin Isaac at the Night of Tributes held at the National Christian Centre.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Obasanjo highlighted Okoye’s significant contributions during his tenure as chaplain at the Aso Rock Villa Chapel. He emphasized Okoye’s wisdom and guidance in high-pressure situations and his unwavering commitment to truth. Obasanjo also noted Okoye’s involvement in various national roles, including serving on the Presidential Advisory Council on Youth Affairs and as Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Abuja.



Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by John Kennedy Opara, recounted his time with Okoye at the Aso Rock Villa Chapel and praised his integrity. Jonathan recalled how Okoye became the chapel’s chaplain during his presidency and later recommended his successor.



Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon remembered Okoye as a pioneer of the Nigeria Prays movement, commending his leadership and commitment. Gowon shared his tribute virtually, acknowledging Okoye’s longstanding support for the movement.



Senator Victor Umeh, representing Mr. Peter Obi, spoke about Okoye’s efforts to promote peace during political unrest in Anambra State. Okoye’s wife, Pastor Mrs. Toyin Okoye, expressed gratitude for the support her family received and reflected on her husband’s life of integrity and faith.



Dr. Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre and CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh also paid respects, noting Okoye’s dedication to Nigeria’s spiritual and physical wellbeing and his role as a mentor and preacher.



Rev. Okoye is survived by his wife, six children, and nine grandchildren. The night of tributes highlighted the enduring legacy and values left by Okoye, as shared by his son, Mr. Victor Okoye. Archbishop Wale Oke led prayers for Okoye’s family and the church community he left behind.
