Nimo (Njikoka)-Founder, All Sports Foundation Training Camp, Nimo, Coach Johnny Igboka has decried the deplorable state of his training facility at Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area.
The facility, located at St. Michael’s Secondary School, Nimo had been there since 2009.
Igboka also, National Head Coach, Anambra State Track and Field events, in an interview with an Information Officer, expressed sadness over the deteriorated condition of the site, blamed it on poor logistics.
“With the facility, I have been able to use my expertise to develop sporting activities for various schools and individuals from the community over the years.
“A number of athletes have come into the limelight under my tutelage like, Amaka Oyeocha from Abagana, who specialises in short put and Ebuka Ude from Nimo, a Javelin champion based in Italy.
“Anambra has continued to emerge tops in various sporting activities and even produced talented athletes in National and International competitions,’’ he said.
Coach Igboka noted that he had continued to produce champions in the course of maintaining the facility without any aid.
“The attention of Anambra State Sports Development Commission and the Ministry of Education have been drawn to the deplorable condition of the field, but nothing has yet been done to give it a facelift.’’
He lamented that erosion had been the bane of the area as there had always been loss of soil thereby making the site unfit for sporting activities.
He, then, pleaded with Government and stakeholders in sports to partner with him in ensuring that the site would be restructured with the state of the art equipment for enhanced sporting engagements.
The coach highlighted that the National Sports Festival, which was scheduled to be held in Benin, the Edo capital, remained uncertain because of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.
It was at the height of the pandemic that the festival was suspended indefinitely.
He maintained that it would be a risk to stage the event as athletes could be exposed to the infection of the contagion.
