The former Military President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Babangida has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on the need to heal the wounds of the heated campaign exchanges by embracing those who contested alongside with him.
Congratulating President Buhari on his re-election for the next four Years, General Babangida urged him to resist any temptation of seeing his opponents as enemies but fellow compatriots who merely disagreed with him on how best to move the country forward.
General Babangida told Voice Of Nigeria through his media office in Minna Niger State on Saturday that despite the turbulent terrain of politics, President Buhari has submitted himself to the process which clearly shows his testimony and believe in the democratic process and ideals.
Now that the President has won his re-election bid, he should confront with renewed vigour the most urgent problem confronting Nigeria: Insecurity of lives and property’. The Boko Haram insurgency remains a threat to many Nigerians particularly in the North East sub region while the twin evils of kidnapping and armed robbery/armed banditry remain a major national menace, he said.
Advising the president on given priority to security issues, General Babangida told him to also place urgent attention to the economy and encouraged him to devise creative ways in formulating policies that would improve it, create employment opportunities and give hope to the teeming youths.
Devolve some powers
He also urged President Buhari to always heed to the yearnings of reasonable Nigerians for restructuring the country and seek all constitutional means to devolve some powers presently exercised by the Nigerian government to the other tiers of government.
Commending other contestants for the office of President of Nigeria, General Babangida however showed appreciation with the gallant and audacious spirit of the main challenger in the Presidential race, Atiku Abubakar a former Vice President.
I was not surprised that even though he lost the most exotic position of the land, his doggedness and pattern of support cut across ethnic, religious and regional lines that earned him the second position of the last Presidential election.
Work with the winner of election
He further called on Abubakar to close ranks and work with the winner of the election in an objective and constructive manner so that democracy would continue to thrive in the country.
He urged the former Vice President to prevail on his admirers to eschew bitterness and violence and understand that politics is a game in which there must be only one winner.
The former Military President further commended Nigerians for peaceful conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly’s election.
General Babangida however sympathised and extended his condolences to the families of those that lost their loved ones due to violence in some part of the country.
