Lagos: Prof. Tayo Popoola, a Professor of Communication at the University of Lagos, has praised the tenacity of Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., Chairman of Globacom, as the telecommunications company celebrates its 23rd anniversary. Popoola’s message, titled ‘An Ode to the Bull: Celebrating Mike Adenuga and Glo at 23,’ was shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, highlighting Adenuga’s resilience, ambition, and focus in the telecom industry.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Popoola emphasized that Adenuga’s nickname, ‘the Bull,’ is more than just a label; it represents a career marked by persistence and audacity. Adenuga’s journey was not without challenges; in 1999, his first telecom license was revoked. However, demonstrating resilience, he secured a new license in 2002 and launched Globacom, teaching a valuable lesson that a closed door is not the end of the road.
Globacom officially started its mobile network on August 29, 2003. Despite entering an industry dominated by established players, Globacom redefined the market with per-second billing, allowing users to pay only for the seconds they used. This move challenged the status quo and demonstrated that Globacom was not afraid to innovate and question market assumptions.
Popoola also highlighted Globacom’s significant investment in infrastructure, particularly the Glo-1 submarine fibre-optic cable, which connected Lagos with international points such as Accra and Bude in the UK. This investment reflected a broader ambition beyond merely competing for mobile subscribers, indicating a long-term vision for enhancing telecommunications infrastructure.
Moreover, Globacom’s engagement with football and music helped solidify its connection with the public, integrating the brand into Nigeria’s popular culture. Its sponsorship of the CAF African Player of the Year Awards since 2005 exemplifies its commitment to international sporting associations.
Reflecting on Globacom’s 23-year journey, Popoola noted that the company’s success is a testament to resilience and innovation in a competitive industry. Globacom challenged pricing, invested in infrastructure, and built a brand that transcended the technical aspects of telecommunications.
Popoola concluded by commending Adenuga’s pivotal role in transforming the Nigerian telecom landscape. He emphasized that Globacom’s enduring legacy lies in its ability to challenge market norms and redefine the boundaries of enterprise, thus leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
