Gombe United, Kada Stars and Remo Stars on Wednesday completed the four teams who gained promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League from the Nigeria National League.
In the NNL Super 8 Play-offs in Aba, Kada played a goalless draw with Gombe to top the Northern group with five points same as Gombe, who finished second in the group. Remo finished second behind Insurance with six points after a 2-1 win over Delta Force, who lost all their matches in the group.
Insurance of Benin finished the group unbeaten after securing a 1-0 win over rivals Shooting Stars in their last match to top the group with nine points. The defeat condemned the Oluyole Warriors to another season in the NNL.
The final of the play-offs holds on Thursday with Insurance playing Kada for the NNL title.
Gombe coach Ladan Bosso said he had achieved his first objective with the club, adding that he would focus next on the NPFL, which is scheduled to begin on January 13.
The first task ahead of us was to gain promotion to the NPFL and we are happy we have done that. What we want to do next is to go ahead and play in the final of the Super 8, he said.
The match versus Kada is one of our toughest because the opposing players didn’t let the game flow well. They were falling down and faking injuries, which defeated the main purpose of a football match entertainment.
Now that we have qualified for the NPFL, we will work harder on our weaknesses before the season starts so that we can hold our own in the league. We don’t want to play in the topflight for a season and return to the NNL. The league will be tough but our players will be ready when the season starts. He added.
