Government cautions Nigerians against ‘flouting currency rules’ in Ethiopia

The Nigerian Government has cautioned Nigerian travellers against flouting foreign currency rules when travelling to Ethiopia.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the warning in Abuja on Monday.

In a press release signed by the Mrs. Chinyere Ihuoma, Director, Public Communication and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed said Nigerian travellers were consistently losing foreign currency to Ethiopian customs and revenue authority because of their ignorance of Ethiopia’s regulation regarding declaration of foreign currency and other valuables.

To prevent financial losses recorded to Nigerian travellers to and on transit from Addis Ababa, the ministry of foreign affairs has requested the urgent dissemination of the need for Nigerian travellers to strictly adhere to this regulation by declaring foreign currencies and other valuables in their possession to Ethiopian authorities to avoid seizure and unnecessary harassment, he said.

The Information minister asked media houses in the country to disseminate this vital information to Nigerians and the general public to ensure that Nigerian travellers to Addis Ababa have knowledge of Ethiopia’s travel rules .

Earlier this year the Nigerian mission in Addis Ababa protested to the Ethiopian government about the frequent seizure of foreign currency from Nigerian travellers without proper awareness made by the Ethiopian Airlines on arrival in Addis Ababa.
