GOVERNMENT URGES RIVERINE RESIDENTS TO MOVE ON HIGH GROUND

Otuocha (Anambra East LGA)-Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has urged all riverine residents in Anambra to relocate to higher grounds during when floodwaters comes calling.

The Governor said this during his tour to Police Marine Jetty, Otuocha in Anambra East Local Government Area (LGA).

Gov. Obiano, who embarked on tour of riverine communities in the state was aimed at ascertaining the water level and the effect of severe flooding in those areas.

He expressed at the safety of people living in the flood-affected communities, stressing that last year the areas were submerged by severe flooding.

The governor, then, enjoined those living close to river banks to move to higher grounds, noting that government had made arrangement for effective evacuation of people when need arises”.

The Nigeria Navy, transition committee chairman, police and vigilance groups are ready for safety and emergencies of people that will be displaced by floodwaters.

We have eight water ambulances and 21 speed boats and Navy gun boat,” he explained.

He commended the cooperation of ‘Ndi Omabala’ toward security the agencies, urging them to provide information that would enable security agencies to stem the tides of herdsmen challenges in the communities.

The governor hailed the traditional rulers of each of the communities, enjoining them to caution their youths against indulgence in hard drugs and other vices.

Please assign a member of your cabinets to take responsibility of the affairs of youths in your communities.”

Commissioner for Works, Mr Macel Ifejiofor re-assured Umuoba Anam that the contractor in charge of road leading from the place to marine had been directed to resume work by next week.

He, then, promised them that the road would be completed before Christmas period.
