ABUJA, Six fighters of the Boko Haram Islamist militant group have been killed by Nigerian government forces in an operation aimed at dislodging the remnant of the terror group in Nigeria's north east.
Nigerian Army Spokesman Sani Usman told journalists here Wednesday that the terrorists were killed in the Dikwa area of the northeastern state of Borno on Monday.
Usman said the troops, assisted by the civilian self-defence force in the area, had laid an ambush for the terrorists between two villages in the area.
"Several other terrorists sustained various degrees of injuries," he added.
The Nigerian Army said troops were sustaining the tempo in their fight against terrorists and aimed to clear unrepentant Boko Haram fighters from the shores of Nigeria.
The Boko Haram has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 2.3 million people in its attacks on Nigeria and some neighbouring countries since 2009.
