Abuja: Mr. Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, emphasized the potential of Galaxy Backbone’s (GBB) G-Zone Free Internet Hotspot to enhance digital inclusion across Nigeria. Gagare made this statement during the official launch of the G-Zone Free Internet Hotspot in Abuja, an event that is part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of GBB.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the initiative is a collaborative effort with operators of public parks within the Federal Capital Territory, including City Park and Jabi Lake Park. Gagare urged Nigerians to take ownership of digital infrastructure projects within their communities to ensure sustainability and long-term benefits. He highlighted the importance of communities viewing government-provided infrastructure as their own to protect and sustain them.
Drawing from his experience in the Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gagare noted that communities benefiting from government projects are encouraged to safeguard such facilities. He reinforced the necessity of connectivity in modern society, labeling it as a crucial driver of economic and social development. ‘Data is like life. In today’s world, connectivity is more valuable than many natural resources because it creates opportunities for everyone,’ he stated.
Gagare hailed the inauguration of the Green Zone Hotspot as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward digital transformation and inclusion. He stressed that access to reliable, affordable, and high-speed internet connectivity is essential in today’s knowledge-driven economy, driving productivity, supporting education, and creating opportunities for businesses and citizens. He congratulated GBB’s board, management, staff, and former leaders for their contributions to the nation’s digital development.
The Federal Government, Gagare assured, will continue to support GBB through policy backing, patronage, and funding to expand connectivity nationwide. He called for a renewed commitment to harnessing technology for national development, economic growth, and inclusive prosperity.
Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of GBB, announced that this initiative marks the first phase of GBB’s free public internet hotspot program aimed at expanding digital inclusion and providing affordable internet access nationwide. Adeyanju emphasized the goal of democratizing access to digital services and bridging connectivity gaps among citizens.
He reflected on GBB’s founding 20 years ago, noting that its mission to provide internet access remains unchanged but has deepened over time. Parks will be transformed into digital hubs where citizens can access educational resources, conduct business, work remotely, and connect globally without data costs.
Mr. Imoukhuede Felix, Manager of Junkyard, speaking on behalf of other park operators, praised the quality and speed of the internet services provided by GBB, describing the connectivity as reliable and faster than other networks he had experienced.
