Abuja: The Population Association of Nigeria (PAN) has pledged to sustain its partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) to advance population policies and national development despite the death of its Chairman.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, PAN President Prof. Enang Ebingha made this commitment during a condolence visit to the commission in Abuja following the death of its Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf. Ebingha emphasized the association’s dedication to supporting the NPC in achieving its objectives and advancing population policies that contribute to sustainable national development across Nigeria and beyond.
Ebingha highlighted that PAN had previously engaged in consultations with Yusuf and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions to challenges facing the commission. These efforts aimed to strengthen collaboration on population-related issues across the country. He described Yusuf as a strategist who demonstrated leadership and humility, noting that his commitment remained an inspiration to PAN and stakeholders.
Dr. Jeremiah Nwankwagu, Commissioner representing Ebonyi, received the PAN delegation. He described Yusuf’s death as a painful loss to the commission and the nation. Nwankwagu praised Yusuf as a friend, father, mentor, and ally who revitalized the commission through strategic committees, guidance, and delegation of responsibilities during his tenure.
Nwankwagu emphasized that the NPC would continue building on Yusuf’s legacies and ensure that its mandate was accomplished. He urged stakeholders to support the commission fully and consistently and encouraged PAN to sustain its partnership with the NPC, particularly on the draft policy on population issues.
Dr. Abuh Mohammed, the Director-General of the NPC, described Yusuf as a friend and compatriot, highlighting their close working relationship with PAN and stakeholders. Mohammed assured the delegation that some of Yusuf’s legacies, including plans for PAN, would be sustained. He noted that the commission had reviewed Yusuf’s seven-point agenda and would implement some aspects immediately, while others would be phased in according to available resources.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Yusuf, who was sworn in as the NPC’s eighth substantive chairman on December 3, 2025, passed away on August 28, 2026.
