House of Representatives condemns attack on Senate

The House of Representatives has condemned the attack on the Senate Chamber early today by armed hoodlums and took away the Senate mace.

The lawmakers also gave twenty four hours to the Inspector-General of Police to track down the hoodlums and recover the mace.

Briefing National Assembly Correspondents, the Chairman House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, AbdulRazak Namdas, said the House will constitute a committee to investigate the matter as part of measures to be adopted to prevent future occurrence.

The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Yusuff Lasun led members who briefly suspended plenary to pay a solidarity visit to the senate over the mace that was forcefully taken away from the chamber by hoodlums.

While describing the carting away of Senate mace as a mockery of the country’s democracy, Mr Lasun stressed that the eight assembly is going to make sure that democracy must work in Nigeria.

Early in the morning thugs numbering four forced themselves into the Senate Chamber and took away The Mace while plenary was going on, throwing the whole National Assembly into a great confusion.

The thugs were seen inside the National Assembly Complex with the suspended Senator from Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo Agege.

Eye witnesses said that the thugs with guns beat the security personnel and forced their way into the chamber and took the Mace away to an unknown destination in a jeep parked inside the complex.
