House passes reconciled North-east commission bill into law

The House of Representatives has passed into law, the reconciled bill for the establishment of the North East Development Commission, NEDC.

The commission is to manage funds allocation for the reconstruction of North-East Nigeria, affected by years of insurgency of boko haram.

Presenting the bill before its passage, the Chairman House Committee on IDPs, Refugees and North East Initiatives, Sani Zorro said the amended bill will help in tackling the issue of poverty and other humanitarian challenges facing the displaced people in the area.

He said the bill which was transmitted to the President for ascent on 17th of January this year was withdrawn a month later to harmonize some of the observation made by the executive.

There has not been fundamental alteration to the bill, what happened is that we want the bill to benefit from the experience of the NDDC and other similar bills that were enacted by the National Assembly to address particular situation and to further enrich the document, Zorro added.

The House also passed into law, the amendment bill on deep offshore and inland basin production sharing contract as measures aimed at increasing revenue generation from the sector.
