Humanity urged to be sympathetic towards refugees

As the World Refugee Day holds tomorrow, 20th June, an appeal has gone to humanity to be more sympathetic towards the cause of millions of refugees across the world.

The North Central Zonal Coordinator of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and internally Displaced Persons, Mrs Jumai Ahmed made the call on Monday in Ilorin the kwara state capital North central Nigeria while speaking with VON Correspondent.

According to her, the day is to commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees across the World and to recognize their contributions to the world.

Mrs Ahmed said the Federal Government has been doing enough to attend to the welfare of refuges, particularly Internally Displaced Persons.

She urged other tiers of government and the general public to also contribute in alleviating the plights of the people.

The North Central Zonal Coordinator said the mission of the Commission includes rehabilitating and integrating refugees into their host societies.

Two other officers of the Commission, Mr. Adeyemi Oluwaseyi and Mr Olanrewaju Yusuff also told VON that the legal status of refugees is given international recognition and their fundamental human rights are guaranteed.

They assured that the internationally Displaced Persons camps in the country are now safe and are protected.
