I stand with President Buhari on June 12 – Information Minister

The recent declaration of June 12 as Nigeria's Democracy day is a confirmation of President Muhammadu Buhari's conviction that there is no alternative to the practice of true democracy in any part of the world.

Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said this in his reaction to views and comments emanating from the declaration of June 12 as a more symbolic day which truly represents Nigeria's transition from military dictatorship to democratic rule.

The Minister lauded President Buhari's decision to immortalize the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola and foremost human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi for their roles in the struggle to entrench democracy in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has demonstrated uncommon courage. He has shown that he is indeed a consummate democrat. All lovers of democracy should stand by him.

Lai Mohammed took a swipe at the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for criticizing the decision to recognize the significance of June 12, 1993 as the day seeds of true democracy were planted in the country.

It is important to note that for sixteen years the PDP had danced on the grave of Moshood Abiola and successive presidents under the PDP bluntly refused to listen to the voice of Nigerians. If the PDP now accuses the President of playing politics with this decision, why didn't they play politics with it for sixteen years also? he asked.

In another development, the Minister has condoled with the management of Punch newspapers over the death of its Chairman, Mr. Wale Aboderin.

In a condolence visit to the headquarters of the newspaper in Lagos, Lai Mohammed described Mr. Aboderin as a true Nigerian and philanthropist with an exceptional sense of humility.

He prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed and that the Punch newspapers, family and friends of Mr. Wale Aboderin, receive the fortitude to bear the loss.
