INEC cautions electorate against rejection of smart card readers

The Upcoming Saturday’s Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly election is prone to cancellation in any unit that resists the use of Smart card readers in Niger state, North Central Nigeria.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Niger State North Central Nigeria Professor Sam Egwu made this disclosure after noticing a deliberate refusal of making use of the smart card readers by people in some Communities during the Presidential and National Assembly’s elections in the State.

There were instances whereby some members of the community resisted making use of the smart card readers. In other words, there was popular pressure on the citizens themselves of not accepting the card reader but manual voting.

He however re-emphasized on the commitment of the Commission to henceforth cancel any center that resists the use of smart card reader.

The functionality of the smart card reader is not tide to the availability of net work its designed to function without any network Professor Egwu said.

The Niger State Resident Electoral Commissioner in North Central part of Nigeria, Professor Egwu who was briefing the media after the inspection of electoral materials at the Branch of Central Bank in Minna, the State Capital on Tuesday.

He said despite the challenges encountered with few smart card readers in some places, they were immediately rectified by the technical crew attached to the electoral units.

There are few instances were hoodlums wanted to attack and snatch ballot boxes and disrupting polls but the security operatives quickly intercepted the security agents and the hoodlums are in police custody for investigation.

Where ever we noticed such issue, automatically the results of the unit would be cancelled including over votingPeople should take note, he said.

Professor Egwu further said the INEC in the state has concluded all arrangements for the onward movement of all sensitive and non sensitive material to all the respective areas across the state as and when due for the prompt commencement of the Saturday’s Gubernatorial and State House Of Assembly.
