The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State, has urged leadership of political parties to support the corps in halting reckless driving during camping rallies.
The Sector Commander, Mr Ali Sule-Tanimu, made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Katsina.
He said that the measure was part of the strategies to reduce road accidents resulting in loss of lives and property.
Sule-Tanimu said that campagn rallies should not be a do-or-die affair, hence the need for politicians and their supporters to abide by traffic rules and regulations for safety.
He said that the Commissioner of Police convened a security meeting of all security agencies and leadership of political parties on how to abide by all the regulations.
“They gave us assurances that they will talk to their members to comply with all the regulations, including traffic rules and regulations,” he said.
According to him, several political parties had written to the FRSC, others even came to seek for the corps cooperation and understanding.
“We made it categorically clear to them that there is need for them to educate their members that election is not a do-or-die thing.
“They should not compromise their lives by overloading themselves in vehicles. We told them that their members should live up to expectation.
“They should educate their members not to obstruct traffic, not to close all the roads and make it difficult for other road users; they should tell their members not to violate traffic rules and regulations,” he said.
