June 12 Democracy Day Declaration: Every Nigerian Is A Winner – Edo Ex-Sen Candidate

BENIN CITY A former Edo South Senatorial Candidate in the 2019 general election, Mr Aiko Obobaifo yesterday described democracy in Nigeria as ‘gradually getting mature’, following the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day from May 29th by the Federal Government.

Mr Obobaifo who spoke with The Nigerian Observer on the Day, said the declaration goes beyond the person of Chief MKO Abiola, adding, it is an invitation for well-meaning Nigerians to be altruistic in matters of national security and development.

Obobaifo who contested on the platform of National Conscience Party (NCP) noted that, every Nigerian is a winner in the declaration, further adding, it behooves on everyone to jealously guard and protect it from the prevailing negative democratic culture.

According to Obobaifo, The soul and conscience that have become scarce among many Nigerians remain the biggest problem. June 12 was washed with the precious blood of Nigerians, so it is a day that deserves permanent place in the trajectory of our nationhood.

The Custodian, Institute for Benin Studies however explained, the significance of the day lies in the fact that October 1, 1960 was ratified by the colonialists, while we went ahead to earn October 1st, 1963 for ourselves. May 27 and later 29 were Military bequests and June 12, remains the truly fight for independence.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last year approved June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day, but ratified it with the signing of the Public Holiday (Amendment) Bill into Law recently, stating in his Democracy Day speech that, the approval was part of the process of correcting injustice, healing and reconciliation to foster peace and unity.

Meanwhile, President Buhari during the maiden June 12 (Democracy Day) celebration proposed the renaming of Abuja National Stadium as Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
