Kaduna government takes steps to sanitise its markets

The Managing Director, Kaduna Market and Development Company, Hafiz Bayero says the Company will issue notice to owners of illegal structures within the markets and as well erase hawking completely within Kaduna metropolis.

He disclosed in an interview shortly after the Abuja Markets Management Limited paid a courtesy visit to Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai at the Government House in Kaduna.

The Managing Director disclosed that, the Company is already building new markets for people to rent, saying in a few months, selling and hawking around Kaduna metropolis will not be allowed except in shops.

Bayero said they have been working assiduously with the Abuja Markets Management Limited to improve on the markets by developing a sustainable facility management system that will provide a stream of value added services aimed at benefitting the government, traders, shoppers and other market users.

It is one of those companies that Governor El-Rufai set up that is still up and doing and has gone beyond thinking within the realm for what it was established to do.

On his part, the Managing Director, Abuja Markets Management Limited, Abubakar Faruk said, they were in Kaduna for a robust engagement with Kaduna market and also provide advisory services so that government can make full use of the resource centre in speeding up the actualisation of set goals of the Company.

Faruk mentioned that, the Company which Governor El-Rufai established while as Minister of FCT 14 years ago has grown to maturity, spreading out from Wuse Market to thirteen other markets, shopping complexes and neighbourhood centres in the FCT, extending to Nasarawa State owned markets.

He further explained that, the Abuja market management has introduced a technology driven service delivery system, especially in the area of access control toll collection which has been automated, as well as in other revenue generating sectors.

We have also optimized the revenue generating capacity of the market environment especially through our door advertising, sales promotion and branding.

The Managing Director said, the Company recently added to its portfolio, an e-commerce platform called www.kassuwa.com envisioned to provide online presence for ignored small business owners to position them to become global players and share from the derivable benefits.

At the moment, in collaboration with our parent Company and other service providers, we are working at providing alternative uninterrupted power supply to the markets so that with the markets properly lit and more secured, shopping hours could be extended to enable the market compete more favourably with other privately owned shopping malls in the city.

In his response, Governor El-Rufai expressed delight that the Abuja market management were able to extend their services to other States, particularly on the support given to Kaduna State Market Development Company, hoping that, they will engage more robustly with them and support them to get to the level they have attained.

He congratulated and urged them to continue with the management team work to ensure that Kaduna markets are organised, developed and managed similar to that of the Abuja markets.

He said he was exceedingly proud of them for making progress in the Company as against many of the institutions he established while in Abuja that has been bastardized.
