Abuja: Mr Danjuma Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says he has no authority to infringe on the rights of any resident of the council. Shekwolo made this statement while addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, responding to a viral video and subsequent reports.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the council chairman, in the video circulated on Tuesday, directed residents of the council to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the area council. However, Shekwolo clarified that he had no authority to disenfranchise any resident of Kuje Area Council of their fundamental human rights. He emphasized that his remarks during a meeting with youths and loyalists of the APC were misinterpreted and sensationalized across various media platforms.
Shekwolo noted that the information shared on social media led to a distorted narrative about his administration’s core values and official stance. He explained that the meeting in question was focused on administrative efficiency, local development, and community welfare, without any intention of alienating residents. His administration, he stated, is committed to equitable governance and serving all constituents, irrespective of political affiliation, ethnic background, or religious beliefs.
The chairman urged journalists to maintain high professional standards by verifying the full context of statements before publishing reports. He stressed that verifying information is a critical pillar of democracy and emphasized his open-door policy for constructive feedback, dialogue, and accurate reporting. Shekwolo also called on residents to collaborate with his administration for the growth and development of the Area Council and the FCT.
