The Kwara State Government has reiterated its determination to encourage the teaching and learning of Mathematics as the pivotal of development.
The State Deputy Governor, Elder Peter Kisira stated this in Ilorin, the state capital while receiving the executive members of the State Mathematical Association of Nigeria in his office.
Elder Kisira who stressed the importance of Mathematics to the development of the people and the Nation described the subject as the engine room and basic instruments of Science.
The Deputy Governor decried the lack of interest in the Subject among Students calling on parents to play effective role in partnering with relevant bodies to encourage the teaching and learning in institutions of learning across the country.
He challenged members of the Association and relevant bodies to work towards producing Mathematics teachers to ensure the development and progress of the country.
Elder Kisira thanked the Association for appointing him the Pillar of Mathematics in the State.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Association, Doctor Funsho Bello described the Deputy Governor as a role model to members of the Association hence the conferment of the award of Pillar in recognition of his immense contribution to the growth and teaching of Mathematics.
Doctor Bello explained that the Association has been working with relevant organisations, organising and attending competitions to encourage the teaching of the Subject.
The Chairman stressed the need for awareness to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of the Subject.
He called for the assistance of the government for its members to attend seminars and conferences to be abreast of development in the profession.
