Lagos education board to distribute palliatives to pupils at home

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB is set to kick-Start the distribution of food palliatives to primary  school pupils at home.

The Chairman of LASUBEB, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King who disclosed this to journalists in Ikeja on Thursday, explained that the Palliative measure was a directive from the Presidency to continue the home grown school feeding Programme even as schools are closed due to the coronavirus scourge.

The programme is under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Home Grown School Feeding Programme in collaboration with the Lagos State Government through the Universal Basic Education Board and all stakeholders in the basic education sub sector.

We need to understand that the school feeding Programme has been running before now, it is targeted at primary 1-3 pupils in public primary schools. We have gone around using our school vendors and school management board based on available data to identify and verify the households that will benefit from the Programme.” he said

No sabotage

Allaying fears that the students feeding Programme might be sabotaged, the Executive Chairman said that the beneficiaries of the programme have already been identified and verified.

He said the distribution exercise will be monitored by nternational and local organisations for transparency.

According to him, “over 37,589 households are being targeted for the pilot scheme with 202 centers already designated for the distributions.”

Food items to be distributed include; 5kg of rice and beans each, 2 rolls of sachet tomato paste, 500ml of Palm and groundnut oil, salt and 12 pieces of eggs.

Taking ownership

The Special Adviser to the President on National Home Grown School Feeding, Mrs. Titilola Adeyemi-Doro stated that the Federal Government is coordinating the process while the State Government fashions out how best to reach the students.

Efficient distribution

The Secretary of the Lagos state Universal Basic education Board (LASUBEB) , Mrs Folusho Ajimoti said that the board has had series of meetings to ensure efficient distribution of the Palliative.

Ajimoti added that vouchers will be distributed to households already identified with board members, education secretaries of each Local Government and food vendors supervising the distribution.
