Lagos:The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has announced a series of events to celebrate the 2026 World Food Day. The activities are expected to involve about 3,500 stakeholders from various agricultural value chains.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Agriculture, revealed these plans during a recent news conference in Lagos. World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, marks the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945 and serves as a global commitment to address hunger and food insecurity.
Fashola emphasized Lagos State’s dedication to ensuring residents have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. The 2026 theme, ‘Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow,’ aligns with the state’s agenda for transforming food systems, calling for innovation and technology to boost agricultural productivity and food security.
He highlighted the necessity of innovation in Lagos due to its growing population and food demands, stressing the importance of exploring smarter agricultural practices, reducing food loss, and improving distribution networks. The ministry also aims to empower farmers, promote youth involvement, and foster partnerships with private investors and technology providers.
The events for the World Food Day celebration include a road walk on October 8 starting from JJT Park, a quiz competition on October 14 at Fresh Food Hub, and a grand finale on October 16 at Ikeja Police College Parade Ground, with Governor Sanwo-Olu as the Special Guest of Honour.
Fashola commended partners supporting the event and urged stakeholders to participate and ensure media coverage. Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Audu encouraged full participation from farmers and food vendors, highlighting the commitment to sustainable food production in Lagos.
