Lagos to hold Tourism Summit

The Lagos state government says the much-awaited Tourism Summit that is expected to change the face of Tourism in Lagos and Nigeria at large will come up next week.

The state Commissioner for Tourism, Art and Culture, Mr. Steve Ayorinde stated that the idea was to create a path to raise the bar of the state’s Tourism platform and reposition its strength among other tourists destinations in Africa and the World.

Ayorinde stated that the administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has been pursuing the project ‘THESE’ which is using Tourism, Health, Entertainment Sports for Excellence to invest in human capital and culture and engage creativity, promoting genius minds in the art, entertainment and Tourism.

Tourism Summit

The Commissioner said The whole point is to fulfil two roles; to transform the cultural artistic landscape of the state so that we can do better in the eyes of the visitors and to use the gathering that the Summit will provide to generate content for the Lagos State Tourism Master Plan which will be unveiled at the end of next month.

Paper presentation

The Commissioner stressed that the Summit deliberations would be enriched by numerous paper presentations from renowned stakeholders in the tourism business with a keynote address to be delivered by the former President of Ghana, John Mahama.

The gathering will also provide opportunity to engage stakeholders , professionals, leading academics and scholars, researchers in the tourism sector, art, and entertainment industry, local and foreign media practitioners to debate, exchange ideas, deliberate and chart a way forward for Lagos Tourism, he explained.

Mr Ayorinde reiterated the commitment of the state to rejuvenate its Tourism base.

The Summit will facilitate a way of highlighting the areas of intervention that are needed to produce a Master plan that will assist in shaping the tourism sector in Lagos state in the next 15 to 20 years, the commissioner said.

Summit Sessions

There will be four sessions as well as exhibition hall which revolved around six pillars that the proposed Tourism Master Plan will engage.

Some of these are; Cultural heritage, Film, Art and Entertainment, Beach and Leisure, Nature and adventure among others.

Speakers and Moderators

Speakers to expect include a prof. of Wild Life and Ecotourism, University of Ibadan, Prof I.A Ayodele,, Prof. pat Utomi, Mr. James Mc Gregor.

Other panelists include the Director General, Nigeria Tourism and Development Corporation, Mr, Folarin Coker, Managing Director Bank of Industry, Mr. Kayode Pitan, Chairman Lagos state House of Assembly committee on Tourism, Mr Desmond Eliot, among others.

The Lagos State Tourism Summit with the theme: ‘Destination Lagos: Towards a sustainable Tourism Driven Economy,’ is scheduled to hold on Monday, 16th of April 2018.
