Lagos: The Lagos State Government has introduced the Biofortified Blending Machine and Biofortified Rice as part of efforts to address micronutrient deficiencies within the state.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the unveiling ceremony took place at the Lagos State Rice Mill in Imota, Ikorodu, marking a significant advancement in the region’s agricultural sector.
The unveiling of the biofortified blending machine, the sixth of its kind in Nigeria, was highlighted by Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Agriculture. Fashola attributed this achievement to the governor’s leadership in promoting food sustainability. He emphasized the importance of this development for the food and nutrition security of Lagos State and Nigeria.
Fashola noted that the rice mill, among the largest in Africa, is now optimized to produce fortified rice enriched with vital micronutrients including iron, zinc, folic acid, and various B vitamins. This initiative aims to combat malnutrition by addressing the nutritional needs of the population. The fortified rice is expected to meet the increasing demand for rice in Nigeria while tackling malnutrition challenges.
Mr. Emmanuel Audu, the Permanent Secretary at the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, praised the ongoing efforts to ensure food security and sustainability. He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his investment in the rice mill, which is recognized as a leading facility globally. Audu encouraged consumers to choose the Eko Rice brand for its quality and health benefits.
Dr. Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, represented by Mrs. Sarah Balogun, lauded the introduction of the biofortified rice as a remarkable government initiative. She expressed optimism that it would help address nutritional deficiencies and improve food quality in the community.
