Abuja:The Federal Government has emphasized the crucial role of livestock production in achieving sustainable retirement, self-employment, wealth creation, economic development, and food security. This was highlighted by Alhaji Idi Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, during an event in Abuja for the presentation of the book ‘Guide to Self-Employment and Sustainable Retirement Plan through Livestock Production’ authored by Dr. Gabriel Ugwu.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the minister, represented by Prof. Eustace Iyayi, Special Assistant on Feed and Fodder Development, stated that the establishment of the ministry by President Bola Tinubu two years ago was aimed at transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector into a vibrant and globally competitive industry. This aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on food security, job creation, economic empowerment, and the development of productive sectors.
Maiha described the book as a practical tool for creating productive Nigerians who can generate income and build sustainable livelihoods through livestock enterprises. He highlighted the opportunities in the livestock value chain, including cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, pigs, feed and fodder production, animal health services, processing, transportation, marketing, and value addition.
Retirement from formal employment, Maiha argued, should not equate to economic inactivity. With proper knowledge and investment, livestock can provide income security during retirement. For young Nigerians and farmers, it offers pathways to self-employment and enterprise expansion.
Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, chairman of the event and National Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, noted the significance of the publication in a changing economic environment. Represented by Dr. Wasiu Adeoye, he emphasized that livestock production offers vast possibilities for enterprise development and wealth creation.
Dr. Gabriel Ugwu stated that his book aims to help non-professionals build livelihoods through livestock, addressing challenges such as access to finance, land, and technical know-how. Prof. Ndubuisi Machebe, reviewing the book, highlighted the dynamic nature of animal husbandry and the need for accessible knowledge to enhance understanding in the sector.
