Lagos: Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has called on stakeholders to guide the youth in channeling their energy and potential into meaningful achievements. Meranda made this call during her keynote address at the second edition of Mentorship with HOA 2.0, themed ‘Leading with Purpose: Mentoring the Next Generation of Transformational Leaders.’
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event, held at the council secretariat, gathered youths, political leaders, professionals, and community development advocates to discuss ways to groom the next generation for transformational leadership. Meranda emphasized the critical role mentors play in providing direction, correcting mistakes, and creating access to opportunities. She urged youths to leverage mentorship opportunities and learn from experienced leaders who have navigated challenges and failures.
Mr. Babajimi Benson, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also addressed the gathering, urging youths to take ownership of their future by starting and registering businesses while honing entrepreneurial skills. Benson highlighted that entrepreneurship fosters responsibility, discipline, and purpose, positioning youths to contribute to economic development.
Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, the convener of the programme and Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, described the initiative as an investment in people, aimed at preparing youths for leadership. Aroyewun stressed that true leadership is rooted in character, competence, and responsible conduct, encouraging mentees to demonstrate leadership qualities regardless of official titles.
The programme included a panel discussion on transformational leadership, mentorship, personal development, career growth, and youth empowerment. Mrs. Enitan Oba, Council Leader of Ikorodu West LCDA, emphasized during the panel that the true measure of transformational leadership is impact, not titles or accomplishments.
Dr. Adeleke Dankuwo, Medical Director of Cute Hospital, Agunfoye, Ikorodu, urged youths to equip themselves with self-belief, integrity, vision, empathy, and practical skills. He noted that leadership opportunities often arise for those who have adequately prepared themselves.
Mr. Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, Chairman of Agege Local Government, highlighted that leadership begins with taking responsibility and adding value. He encouraged youths to develop themselves and remain prepared to deliver when opportunities arise.
Other panelists, including Mr. Damilare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sports, and Mr. Tolupe Faniyi, a community stakeholder, underscored the importance of mentorship and continuous self-development. They advised youths to remain open to learning while developing discipline, emotional intelligence, consistency, and integrity.
