Calabar: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on political figures, media professionals, and citizens to prioritize national unity over sectional, ethnic, religious, and partisan interests. This appeal was made during the official reactivation of the remodeled Cross River State Newspaper Corporation, widely known as the Nigerian Chronicle.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event also marked the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art Government Printing Press, signifying a major advancement in the state’s information infrastructure. Idris emphasized the importance of this development in promoting credible journalism, effective government communication, and accurate documentation in Cross River.
With political activities ramping up in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, Idris urged stakeholders to communicate responsibly with the public. He highlighted the need for media and electoral process participants to avoid misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and incitement that could foster division among Nigerians.
Idris pointed out that the forthcoming elections would challenge not only the country’s political institutions but also the integrity and resilience of its information ecosystem. He assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is dedicated to maintaining a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process, allowing relevant institutions to operate independently and professionally.
The minister’s appeal extended to journalists, urging them to verify information before publication and resist sensationalism. He highlighted the media’s role in reporting fairly and maintaining professional ethics, underscoring that political affiliations should not compromise journalistic integrity.
Idris also acknowledged the collaboration between the Federal Government and subnational entities in strengthening Nigeria’s information system. He praised the Cross River Government’s efforts in modernizing its information infrastructure, which includes broadcasting, print, digital communication, and government documentation.
The transformation of the Nigerian Chronicle and the establishment of the Cross River Information Hub were seen as opportunities to advance the state’s information sector. Idris emphasized that modern equipment must be complemented by skilled professionals and effective management to ensure successful journalism.
The minister encouraged ongoing investment in training for media professionals and urged young journalists to embrace technology while adhering to professional standards. He also highlighted the importance of credibility in journalism, noting that public trust, once lost, is challenging to regain.
Idris concluded by discussing the evolving information environment, where news travels rapidly through various platforms, including social media and digital channels. He cautioned against letting technological advancements overshadow journalistic values, emphasizing the need for verification and accuracy in reporting.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Governor Bassey Otu, who reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing communication between the government and citizens. Former Governor Clement Ebri, Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly Elvert Ayambem, and other dignitaries were also present, underscoring the significance of the occasion in shaping the future of information management in Nigeria.
