Abuja: The Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Lawal, has inaugurated the Chairmen and Members of the Governing Boards of various agencies under the Federal Ministry of Environment. The ceremony took place on Friday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Lawal highlighted that these appointments signify the Federal Government’s dedication to emphasizing environmental governance as an essential element of national advancement. He stated that the chosen individuals are expected to oversee agencies that are crucial for Nigeria’s compliance with both domestic and international environmental commitments.
The minister detailed the primary responsibilities of these agencies, which include climate action, pollution and waste management, environmental compliance and enforcement, as well as the conservation of forests, biodiversity, and ecosystems. He urged the newly appointed board members to ensure policy consistency, offer strategic guidance to management, and enhance institutional efficiency and governance.
Lawal stressed the necessity of distinguishing between governance and management responsibilities in accordance with public service reforms and existing laws. He also tasked the members with ensuring compliance, transparency, and operational efficiency in their oversight roles.
During the response on behalf of the appointees, Sen. Magnus Abe, Chairman of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, committed to fulfilling their responsibilities effectively. He assured alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration, aiming to meet the expectations of both the President and the Nigerian populace.
Furthermore, Mr. Michael Etaba, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, called on the new board members to address the country’s environmental challenges promptly.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the inaugurated chairmen include Sen. Magnus Abe for the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Ma’azu Rijai for the National Biosafety Management Agency, Garba Datti for the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, and Ibrahim El-Sudi for the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria. Additionally, Abdulmalik Usman was appointed for the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Chief Edward Omo-Erewa for the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, and Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu for the National Park Service.
